This exercise is the same as the one in Project 2 which was to make hand made braids and cords. Here are the samples I did in Project 2.
It was a bit hard to be enthusiastic about a repeat exercise but I did more samples for this stage trying to vary the materials more and concentrating on the texture, so these samples below are rough on the left and shiny on the right:
Below are soft samples on the left and hard on the right, the ones on the right are made from electrical cable and wire.
Then I experimented with some machine stitched cords (first 2 samples from left below), a cord made from tied strips of fabric, and a plait from painted Tyvek which was knotted and heat treated.
The last two photos are a bowl I made using wrapped cord. The core is piping cord and I wrapped this in variegated yarns, stitching to the underneath layers as I built up the shape. It is quite small, only about 5″ in diameter. I varied the yarns used to give contrasting textures and also varied the placement of the cords to leave gaps and create woven areas.
